WELCOME TO GOOD BURGER, HOME OF THE GOOD BURGER, CAN I TAKE YOUR ORDER??

question: justine…would it be ethical for you to sleep in this bed? being a vegan and all?

separate note…after the success of the plug on fmylife.com (i see this website as someones status/away message daily), i have something else to plug: CREEPYPASTA.com. it is collection of scary stories written by the members of /b/ (4chan…look it up). i dont like to sleep after reading them. you’ve been warned!

Well the ethics of vegans sleeping in hamburger beds are certainly debatable. On one hand, there’s no reason why it couldn’t be a veggie burger bed, in which case it would depend of the brand of veggie burger, as many of them either contain whey or egg whites. Assuming it’s a vegan veggie burger, there’s still the cheese issue, in which case it could always be freese, as opposed to real cheese.

But given that it’s a bed and not a “food” product, presumably no animals were harmed in its making, giving it a vegan status. There are probably lots of vegans/vegetarians who would be fine with sleeping in a hamburger bed, because it’s just that: a bed.

However, there is the issue of image. While obviously not a real burger, the bed takes on the appearance of a real animal carcass, and one who sleeps in such a bed could be seen as promoting the practice of slaughtering cows for ingestion.

On the other hand, the fact that the human is in the hamburger could also be some complex symbolism. The human, who, for the sake of argument, we will regard as a cow-eating omnivore, is apparently dominated by the hamburger depicted by the bed. The image could be regarded as foreshadowing the day when cows rise up in rebellion against the human oppressors, and therefore pro-veg. At the same time, it could be an ironic picture, much to the amusement of the omnivore and others like him.

So ultimately, it’s hard to say for sure whether or not it would be ethical for a vegan/vegetarian to sleep in that bed. Honestly, I feel I would need to ponder a bit more, and know exactly what circumstances it would be under in order to say if I would feel justified in positioning myself in the hamburger bed.

Please go to http://www.zinch.com/voting/Regionals.aspx?GroupId=23 and vote for SAMANTHA KELLEY for Michigan. Voting starts the Wednesday, 25th. It’s worth $20,000 and I made it through the first rounds of competition. Also, if you create a Zinch profile (which really helped me in my college search process) and mention that I helped, I get more points AND your vote counts as 2 instead of one. http://www.zinch.com/Anonymous/StudentRegister.aspx?affid=324845
